Santa Fe County does not have a Superior Court. All case records are handled by the District Court and Magistrate Court. The Magistrate Court handles cases like landlord/tenant disputes ($0-$10,000), traffic citations, criminal misdemeanors, and civil cases where the amount in controversy does not exceed $10,000.

Santa Fe Birth and Death Records

The Santa Fe County Clerk does not issue birth certificates and only provides the public with a basic death record that includes the deceased's name, date of death, and state of death. Generally, Santa Fe County vital records are confidential and restricted to the immediate family members or those with a tangible interest in the record. Registrants should be able to obtain their own Santa Fe County birth certificate.

Record seekers can find birth and death records at the New Mexico Bureau of Vital Records and Health Statistics. The Bureau partners with a third-party vendor to issue Santa Fe County vital records of birth and death online and by phone at (877) 284-0963. The processing time is between 3 and 5 business days. UPS Next Day Air delivery costs $44.50 for a birth certificate and $39.50 for a death certificate, while regular U.S. Mail delivery costs $26 for a birth certificate and $21 for a death certificate. Payments can be made via all major credit cards.

Copies of birth and death records can also be obtained by mail. Santa Fe County Probate Court Records

Santa Fe County Property Records

Santa Fe County property records are subject to the Recording Act and not the Inspection of Public Records Act. Several property records are maintained by different custodians in Santa Fe County. Individuals seeking property records can visit any of the custodian offices during business hours (Monday through Friday, 8:00 a.m. to 5:00 p.m.). Most times, the record staff will require a property owner’s name, parcel number, or property address to facilitate the search. Copies of property records attract a small fee, which must be paid in advance.

Typically, record seekers should find property information from the following offices:

  • The Santa Fe County Assessor: The Office has a Parcel Property Map Search tool where individuals can view parcel information. A search can be conducted by parcel number, owner's name (last or first), address, or Uniform Property Code (UPC).
  • The Santa Fe County Clerk: This Office provides several ways to research and request copies of property documents:
  • Online: Individuals can use the Self-service Portal to view and purchase property records. Log in with PUBLIC as username and PUBLIC as password. Payment can be made online with a credit card. Once a credit card payment is complete, the property document will be sent to users by email. Alternatively, users can conduct an index search and pick up property documents in person at the Clerk’s office. Check the online index for the instrument number of the desired record and email the instrument number to clerk@santafecountynm.gov. The processing time takes 2 business days for pick-up. Use INDEX as username and INDEX as password.
  • In-person: Individuals can visit the Clerk’s office to use the self-serve computers to view property records for free during business hours. Copies of property records can be printed from the computers for a fee. Standard copy fees apply for copies. Alternatively, requesters can pay the staff at the Clerk’s office to search for property records. A fee of $40 for the first 15 minutes and $40 per hr for every hour thereafter applies.
  • The Santa Fe County Treasurer: Individuals can view or print their property tax records by visiting the Santa Fe County Customer Payment Portal. Register for an account and log in to the portal with an email address and password. Upon logging in, click “View Bills” on the left menu bar. Select the desired account and view or print the bill. Afterward, select Continue, and on the next screen, select “View” under the Action column. This will lead to the download of the tax bill document, which can be printed or saved.
